Bring On the Bidding Wars: 14 Movies That Could Sell Big at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival

Bidding wars have already begun for the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. Buyers snapped up six titles in the days leading up to the fest, including one that A24 purchased sight unseen: David Lowery’s “A Ghost Story,” starring Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara. Other movies acquired in the past two weeks are “Berlin Syndrome” (Netflix), “Call Me By Your Name” (Sony Pictures Classics), “Casting JonBenet” (Netflix), “Cries From Syria” (HBO for television rights) and “Long Strange Trip” (Amazon).

‘Tokyo Idols’ examines exploitation of artists and fans
Over the past 30 years, the pop idol culture in Japan has exploded with the rise of the Internet.
Rather than watching Japanese pop singers such as Akina Nakamori, Yuki Saito and Seiko Matsuda on the TV a few times a year, fans can see their favorite singers streamed online every day, said filmmaker Kyoko Miyake, whose “Tokyo Idols” has been accepted in the Sundance Film Festival World Documentary competition.

“In a way, the early singers in the ’70s and 80s are idols of the Golden Age of Japanese television,” Miyake told The Park Record during a phone interview from New York. “They were all stars, but they weren’t accessible. They were more distant because you could see them on music programs on TV. If you were hard-core fans, you would see them in concert maybe three times a year.”

Every January in Utah, thousands of people from around the world flock to the streets and screening sites in and around Park City for the annual Sundance Film Festival. Sundance: Series of concerts set for Park City, Salt Lake during film slate  While movies are, of course, the medium the Sundance Film Festival is known for, the festivities surrounding the event, which runs Jan. 19-29, include plenty of music to help occupy the time not spent in theaters.
A quartet of shows (collectively dubbed Snow Fest) for the paying public will take place at the music club Park City Live, while Visit Salt Lake has helped organize nine days of free shows to take place via the Salt Lake Festival Café at Sicilia Pizza & Kitchen in downtown SLC.
The shows at Park City Live (427 Main St., Park City) include dance/electronica act Major Lazer on Friday, Jan. 20, Dutch trance/pop DJ Tiësto on Saturday, Jan. 21, the masked synth- and bass-heavy electronic dance music DJ known as Marshmello on Sunday, Jan. 22, and Michael Franti & Spearhead — a rock group known for its globally conscious lyrics — on Tuesday, Jan. 24.

Canadian filmmakers shaking things up at Sundance Film Festival
Rise and Rumble aren’t just the titles of two noteworthy Canadian productions headed to this month’s Sundance Film Festival. They’re also statements of purpose.
Canada’s filmmakers are out to get attention and shake up conventional wisdom at Sundance (Jan. 19-29).
This is especially true regarding films from Canada’s indigenous communities. They’ve always been welcome at Sundance, but the selections this year have a new sense of urgency.
Rise, directed by Toronto’s Michelle Latimer, an Algonquin/Métis filmmaker, is an original series for Rogers Media’s Viceland TV channel, planned for broadcast early this year.

‘Trumped’ Documentary Added to Sundance LineupThe Sundance Institute has added the documentary “Trumped: Inside The Greatest Political Upset of All Time” and Drake Doremus’ “Newness” to its upcoming festival lineup.
“Trumped” will premiere on Jan. 27 and screen again the next day at Sundance. The festival opens Jan. 19, the day before Donald Trump’s presidential inauguration, and runs through Jan. 29 with 120 feature-length films, representing 32 countries and 37 first-time filmmakers, including 20 in competition.
