David Levinthal "Wild West" at Julie Nester Gallery

David Levinthal is a central figure in American postmodern photography. Since 1972, he has photographed dolls and toys in settings that force us to question their apparent innocence.
This exhibition combines images from the "The Wild West" (1988-89), which were shot on a Polaroid 20x24 Land Camera, and archival pigment prints from "History" (2014). The images are inspired by the romance and grandeur of 1950’s Western television and film. In composing the photographs, Levinthal arranges figurines into stereotypical poses to portray the rugged individualism of the Western hero. The blurred photographs, rich in color, use the iconic toy figurines to create an illusion of reality and motion. The hazy illusions illustrate the blur of fact, fiction and perception surrounding the cultural myths of the American West.

Sundance Film FestivalTwo documentaries, two classic titles added to Sundance ’17 slate
Two documentaries — about an effort to bring health care to the world's poorest areas and a deep dive into The Grateful Dead — have been added to the slate of films for the 2017 Sundance Film Festival.
Also added to the festival roster, the Sundance Institute announced Wednesday, are two independent classics: Quentin Tarantino's 1992 mobster debut "Reservoir Dogs" and the groundbreaking 1985 lesbian romance "Desert Hearts."

Sundance Film Festival horror anthology XX: See an exclusive first look
The Sundance Film Festival has long been a launchpad for future Oscar-winning movies, like Little Miss Sunshine, Precious, and Boyhood. But over the past few years the event has also proven a great showcase for horror movies — most notably The Witch, which generated huge buzz by scaring the pants off Utah audiences back in 2015. One of the most anticipated genre films being premiered at this year’s event is XX, a quartet of horror stories from four female directors. Karyn Kusama (The Invitation) directs a segment called Her Only Living Son; Jovanka Vuckovic oversees a tale called The Box; and Annie Clark (AKA singer-songwriter St. Vincent) makes her directorial debut with The Birthday Party. The fourth director is Roxanne Benjamin, who was a producer on the original V/H/S — another Sundance-screened horror movie — and here contributes a story called Don’t Fall.
